Avistate - Frequently Asked Questions

I think I have BPH, but I'm not sure. What signs can, or should I look for?

Having to urinate frequently, especially at night, may be a sign that your bladder is not emptying properly. This is typically the initial indicator of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Additionally, the volume and force of your urine stream may be diminished. Other key indicators include; a burning sensation when urinating (due to possible urinary infection), noticeable increases in urine temperature, and blood in your urine. All of these signs and symptoms warrant medical intervention. Your healthcare provider can tell for sure whether or not you suffer from a prostate condition.

Can BPH lead to cancer?

BPH is rarely a life-threatening condition. Because it progresses rather slowly, your symptoms may be similar to those seen in prostate cancer. However, BPH is not thought to increase one's susceptibility to cancer. Your question probably arises from findings concerning prostate-specific antigen levels, or PSA level. BPH sufferers exhibit levels two to three times higher than what is considered normal. Additionally, there is a parallel between high levels of PSA and cancer incidence. Higher PSA = Higher chance of you having cancer. Because of this link, the National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society recommend that men over 50 have annual rectal and PSA examinations to screen for cancer of the prostate.

If BPH and EP (enlarged prostate) are so common, why I'm I being referred to a Urologist?

Your primary care provider will, in most cases, be able to manage your condition effectively. Being referred to a special urologist does not necessarily mean that your symptoms are atypical, rather your provider may just want the greatest care for his/her patient. There are, however, cases in which your doctor will refer on the the basis of abnormal signs and symptoms of the prostate gland. These may include:

  • suspected bladder stone
  • PSA (prostate-specific antigen test) levels are over 4ng/ml
  • repeated urinary tract infections
  • passed blood in your urine
  • sudden and/or severe symptoms that are becoming worse (greater discomfort)
  • blood test indicate possible kidney damage

I've heard that an enlarged prostate can cause impotence. Is this true?

Although the likelihood of impotence occurring is extremely low, it can occur. However, it must be pointed out that the majority of individuals who develop impotency suffer from erectile dysfunction as a direct result of a pre-existing erectile problem/condition. Retrograde ejaculation is far more common than impotence. In retrograde ejaculation, the semen is ejaculated backwards into the bladder rather than being expelled through the penis; thereby making it nearly impossible to father children naturally. But as for impotence, BPH generally does not interfere with sexual function.
